The CW Continues to Bite Competition with Vampire Diaries Ratings

This year’s breakout hit The Vampire Diaries on The CW is still the top draw in the competitive Thursday night 8pm slot despite new competition from NBC’s Trauma. The October 1 Vampire Diaries episode titled “Family Ties” increased its rank in the targeted demographic among women 18-34 by 4% and retained the #2 spot overall among other networks. Bolstered by its impressive cast, which includes Nina Dobrev, Paul Wesley, and Ian Somerhalder, The Vampire Diaries has cemented itself as one of the year’s must-watch television series.

The Vampire Diaries continues to score well in such key demographics as adults 18-34 (2.3/3) and increased its hold in the female teen demographic (2.9/12) according to official numbers released by Neilsen ratings on Friday, October 2.

Along with the strong numbers for The Vampire Diaries, The CW’s Supernatural held firm at 9pm in one of the week’s most competitive timeslots. After a slight dip in ratings last week, Supernatural bounced back and recaptured viewers in two key demographics as it improved 17% in adults 18-34 (14.4) and 7%in women 18-34 (1.6/4). That's a big boost for Supernatural, which stars Jared Padalecki, Jensen Ackles, and Mischa Collins.

The CW’s distinct Thursday night line-up has been a welcome surprise for the network and has brought with it a new appreciation for all things paranormal and mystical. Unlike The CW competition, which is much more broad in targeted audience, The Vampire Diaries and Supernatural have not only taken advantage of their aesthetically pleasing stars but also feature smart teen oriented writing which is displayed by an overall increase in the Thursday night weekly gain of 5% in women 18-34 (2.1/6), 7% in adults 18-34(1.6/5) and 6% in women 18-34 (1.9/5).

The Vampire Diaries airs on Thursdays at 8pm.
