The Plot:
Set in the small town of Mystic Falls, Virginia, The Vampire Diaries revolves around a stereotypically tragic young heroine named Elena, who enrolls at Mystic Falls High School where she meets another new kid named Stefan, unaware that he's a vampire. There's instant chemistry between Elena and Stefan but their budding relationship hits a roadblock when Stefan's older brother, Damon, shows up in town to wreak havoc...and eventually claim Elena for himself.

Episode 1 - "The Pilot"
The season opener begins with a couple navigating an abandoned country road whose romantic banter is interrupted when a fog rolls over and crumpled body drops to the ground. The figure in the fog is, of course, a vampire, and the couple his next meal. After the discovery of the two Mystic Falls residents who have been murdered, the local news reports animal attack as the cause of deaths, though we know better that it's something else.
From there, we meet high school student Elena, who is now living with her aunt because her parents were killed in a car crash. It's the first day of school and Elena, along with her drug-troubled brother Jeremy, must face fellow classmates for the first time since the accident.
Everyone is obviously concerned about Elena, who in turn tries to tell everyone that she's fine. Eventually, Elena notices Stefan Salvatore, a new kid in school who captures the attention of every student but only seems to be interested in one. Stefan makes it apparent that he's into Elena, staring at her throughout a class they share together, much to the dismay of Elena's ex-boyfriend, Matt. Jeremy, on the other hand, tries to talk to Matt's sister, Vicki, who is all over a guy named Tyler.
Later, we get a glimpse of Stefan coming home where his uncle accuses him of killing the couple. Stefan asserts that he didn't and then later opens up an old book and stares at a photo of a woman named Katherine, who's a dead ringer of Elena.
The following night, Stefan and Elena bond in the woods party, where Vicky is attacked by a vampire. She survives but does makes it known that she was attacked by a vampire. While at home, Stefan notices a crow in his room and shortly lays eyes on a face he hasn't seen in more than a decade, his brother Damon. As expected, they have a not-so-friendly conversation and we learn that Damon knows about Katherine and Elena, and that he killed the couple at the beginning of the episode, as well as attacked Vicki though he left her alive to stir more trouble for Stefan. We also find out that Damon is stronger than Stefan since Stefan has stopped feasting on humans.
